Biographical / Historical
Author, playwright, and master storyteller Brother Blue was born Hugh Morgan Hill on July 12, 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio.
Blue told students at the University of Connecticut about his writing career and his early work as a playwright. His success as a storyteller allowed him to travel to England, France, and Switzerland to speak and tell stories. When he completed his A.B. at Harvard University 1948, and his doctorate degree in 1973, Union Graduate School, his dissertation project involved going into jails and asking prisoners to talk and tell stories. This endeavor led him to see the importance of storytelling and made him want to continue working with prisoners and teach writing and storytelling in jails. Some of his stories involved sounds and music like the use of his harmonica.
