Actress Edythe Jason delivered 5 lectures. She spoke on 4/18/1978 (2015-0002/RR188), 3/31/1981 (2015-0002/RR189), 3/23/1982 (2015-0002/RR190), 3/29/1983 (2015-0002/RR191), and 2/14/1984 (2015-0002/RR192).

RR 188 Professor Hale Smith make several class announcements prior to introducing the speaker. Ms. Jason invites students to stop her if they have questions; she provides some personal background before discussing her career as an aspiring actress.

RR 189 Recording begins with music and audio testing. Hale Smith makes class announcements before introducing Edythe Jason, a singer/actress, actress/singer. Ms. Jason speaks about her career, specifically the plight of the Black actress in New York. Her talk was followed by a performance accompanied by Hale Smith on piano. RR 190 Hale Smith introduces Edythe Jason. Ms. Jason addresses some of the conditions/situations facing the aspiring actor, or any performer in any area of show business.

RR 191 Introduction by Hale Smith; Ms. Jason is one of the few speakers who has yet to forge an illustrious career although she has all the qualifications. She's currently at a transitional stage in her career but her talk is about the experiences of a Black actress in New York City.

RR 192 Edward O'Connor makes several announcements before the introduction of the speaker. There is a brief description of the performance to take place the following week featuring Rawn Spearman and Carlesta Henderson (class presentation on RR273). Edythe Jason provides an insiders view of what it's like to be an actress in New York. [First 20s of program is very low, then the levels come up (possibly a technical issue during recording)]

Biographical / Historical

Edythe Jason attended Fisk University (B.A.), then graduated from Indiana University (MM). Jason went on to study acting with William Esper at the Neighborhood Playhouse, and from there she went on at have a very active theatre career.
