Biographical / Historical
Composer, singer, and jazz and classical pianist Patricia (Patti) Bown was born in Seattle, Washington on July 26, 1931. After studying music in Seattle, moved to New York in the 1950s. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Bown played, toured, recorded with Joe Benjamin and Ed Shaughnessy, Quincy Jones, Gene Ammons, James Moody, Oliver Nelson, Illinois Jacquet, and the Joes Newman Jazz Interactions Orchestra as well as served as music director for Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan. In 1959, she recorded an album as its leader, Patti Bown Plays Big Piano. In the 1980s, Bown played in nightclubs and shows in New York, and multiple jazz festivals.
Bown sang and wrote much of her own material, although Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Kenny Burrell also performed her works. Bown died on March 16, 2008 in Media, Pennsylvania.
