Professor Ardelle Striker lectures at the University of Connecticut

Ardelle Striker was born on February 1, 1929 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She received her B.A. from Brooklyn College (1958) and continued her education at Columbia University (M.A. 1960, Ph.D. 1968). She was on the faculty of Finch College (New York City, 1968-1975) before her employment as a Professor of Dramatic Arts at the University of Connecticut (1976-1987).

After her retirement, Ardelle Striker opened the Blue Heron Theatre. Striker oversaw the construction of the Blue Heron Theatre off-Broadway. The theatre opened in 1986. On December 30, 2005, the Blue Heron Arts Center closed its doors. The seven-year old space, installed in an abandoned health club in 1998, hosted more than two hundred theater companies and innumerable individual artists as it flourished at 123 East 24th Street (between Park and Lexington Avenues).

Striker was the recipeint of several awards: National Endowment of the Humanities grantee National Endowment of the Humanities (1974); research grantee University Connecticut (1978-1985); New Theatre Development Professional Performance awards New York State Council on the Arts (1988-1989, 1990-1994). She was also a member of the Modern Language Association, American Society for Theatre Research, Women's History Network, Phi Beta Kappa.

Striker died December 3, 2009 at the age of 80.
