Scope and Content

The collection contains financial records, legal documents, blueprints, drawings, newspapers clippings and photos of the houses built by the Frederick G. Holland Company between 1923 and 1959. The houses were constructed primarily in a housing development in East Hartford, Connecticut, although additional properties in Bloomfield, Hartford, Wethersfield and South Windsor are included.

Biography

Fred G. Holland was born in Hartford, Connecticut on 23 March 1893. He attended Hartford Public High School and was a tobacco farmer from 1908 until 1918.

In 1918, he entered the real estate business principally involved in the development of Sunset Estates in East Hartford. In this endeavor, her built more than one hundred homes. Mr. Holland was an incorporator, a director and an appraiser of residential and industrial properties in the East Hartford Federal Savings and Loan Association. The executive director of the East Hartford Housing Authority from 1942 to 1949, Mr. Holland joined the R. S. Olmstead Agency of Realtors in Hartford in June 1956 as a realtor and appraiser.

Active in East Hartford civic affairs, he served as a member of the Board of Street Commissioners, the Town Plan Commission and as town representative on the 1931 State legislature. He was past president of the East Hartford Chamber of Commerce, a charter member and past president of the of the East Hartford Rotary Club, and was an incorporator of the old Sunset Ridge Golf Club.

He was a memeber of of Orient Lodge 62 AF and AM of East Hartford Sphinx Temple, Order of the Mystic Shrine and the Sphinx Temple Chanters. He was also a member of Bigelow Chapter Number 33, OES of East Hartford.

Mr. Holland died 20 March 1963 at the age of 69.

The houses were constructed primarily in a housing development in East Hartford, Connecticut, although additional properties in Bloomfield, Hartford, Wethersfield and South Windsor are included. A later addition added documentation on the history of the land and house sales.

Acquisition Information

The collection was donated by Crawford Westbrook in 2005. The portfolios were donated in 2020.

The Crawford Westbrook Collection also contains materials documenting the Holland Company and, more spefically, the development of Sunset Estates in East Hartford, Connecticut.
