History
The University of Connecticut League, a civic organization organized to benefit members of the UConn community, held its first planning meeting in January, 1966, and continues to exist at the present time. Founded "to promote social and friendly relations within, and to provide worthwhile service to the University and community," the UConn League has sponsored a variety of social, cultural, and fundraising events for the local and UConn communities and for its own membership. Membership in the organization has depended on dues, which have been used to fund a membership directory, newsletter and student scholarships, welcome newcomers to the community, and fund community services selected by the UConn League.
The UConn League builds on a tradition of hospitality at the University of Connecticut, growing out of the Newcomers Club, which started in 1946. Organized around interest groups, special interests committees, and service groups, the UConn League> has used a hierarchical system of governance which, although modified at certain points in its history, has included a board of directors, president, treasurer, and secretary. Events and fundraisers sponsored by the organization include formal dinners, bake sales, tag sales, cookbook sales, cooking demonstrations, a crafts festival, a fashion review, and shopping trips.
