The collection consists of 47 photographs of steam and electric locomotives of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad. All of the photographs are unidentified as to date, place and photographer; it is uncertain if the photographs were taken by Mr. Preston.

Biography
Mr. Melbourne Preston, born in 1906 or 1907 on North Street in West Haven, Connecticut, was a locomotive engineer for the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad from the 1930s to his retirement in 1971. He was also an amateur photographer.
