Stephen Rosenzweig Papers
Scope and Content
The papers consist almost entirely of photocopies of correspondence, writings, flyers, a labor constitution, and newspaper clippings gathered and generated by Mr. Rosenzweig in the period he organized the Independent Smith Workers union and several years after. Also included are photocopies of The Independent from 1938-1939, a publication edited by Mr. Rosenzweig for the Independent Smith Workers. The letters include some biographical and genealogical information about Mr. Rosenzweig and his ancestors.

Biography
Stephen Rosenzweig was born around 1884 in Hungary and came to the United States in 1905. He likely first settled in Lefor, North Dakota, where much of his extended family lived. By the 1930s he lived in Yonkers, New York, and worked for the Alexander Smith and Sons Carpet Factory where he organized a labor union, the Independent Smith Workers, in the period between 1937 and 1939. In 1939 the members of the labor union voted to join the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), which closed down the Independent Smith Workers. Mr. Rosenzweig retired from the company in 1950.

Abstract
Photocopies of papers of Stephen Rosenzweig, a worker at the Alexander Smith and Sons Carpet Factory in Yonkers, New York, who organized the Independent Smith Workers, a labor union of workers at the factory, in the 1930s.
Acquisition Information
The papers were deposited in 1982 and then photocopied and the originals returned to the donor in 1990.
