Biography
Catherine Stock was born in Stockholm, Sweden, the daughter of an American diplomat. Growing up she moved around frequently, attending school in Paris, Cape Town, and New Orleans, eventually graduating from high school in San Fransisco in 1970. She attended the University of Cape Town, graduating with a bachelor of fine arts degree. Staying in South Africa after graduation, Stock began teaching art and art history at the Hewat Teacher's Training College in Cape Town. Finding teaching an enjoyable experience Stock went to London, where she would eventually receive a teaching certificate.
Returning to live with her parents in New York, Stock began painting portraits to finance a post graduate degree at the Pratt Institute. While there Stock got her first job in advertising, working as the art director for G.P. Putnam and Coward, McCann and Geoghegan Children's Book Departments, in New York. Stock returned to South Africa following her graudation from Pratt, staying for a few years before returning to New York to start a job at Macmillan Children's Books.
Since that time Stock has traveled across the globe, photographing, writing, and painting, and has had a number of museum exhibitions in addition to publishing numerous children's books. She currently resides in France.
