History

Connecticut Countdown was a non-profit, non-partisan organization established in 1983 to create a forum for a balanced discussion of the issues involved in preventing nuclear war. Connecticut Countdown evolved from discussions begun in the fall of 1983 among a small group of Hartford area citizens concerned about the risk of nuclear war. These discussions were initiated by members of the local chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility. The stimulus for their interest was a national meeting of Physicians for Social Responsibility attended by two members of the Hartford Chapter at which Target Seattle, an earlier public forum on preventing nuclear war in Seattle, Washington, was discussed. The organized group, which met in Hartford, decided to try to develop the necessary support to undertake an effort similar to Target Seattle.

Connecticut Countdown was established on the premise that effective national policy on nuclear issues depended on the support of an informed citizenry. As such, Connecticut Countdown aimed to give people an understanding of the probable causes and consequences of nuclear war, and some of the major strategies proposed for preventing it; to help people to decide for themselves how nuclear war can be prevented, and what they as individuals can do to make a difference; and to encourage groups and organizations to continue the dialogue and education on the prevention of nuclear war after Connecticut Countdown has formally ended its activities.
