Scope and Contents

The forty-four illustrations cover a range of subjects depicting the lives of famous composers from childhood to later life. The twenty-two identified illustrations were used in seven books. Some of the illustrations show corrections made in white paint or with corrections pasted on, with some annotations in pencil. The books received in the donation have been catalogued and are available through the online catalogue.

Mary Greenwalt was an illustrator of works celebrating the lives of famous composers: Edvard Grieg, Johann Sebastian Bach, Joseph Haydn, Ludwig Beethoven, and others. Books included music, black & white illustrations, and historical fiction.

Abstract

The Mary Greenwalt Papers include forty-four illustrations of her works on the lives of famous composers published between 1936 and 1946. Twenty-two illustrations have been identified as to the books in which they appeared; twenty-two remain unconnected to published works.

The illustrations are arranged in a single series.

Provenance

The Mary Greenwalt Papers were donated by Jean Marzollo, noted children's literature author and illustrator who has donated the Jean Marzollo Papers as well. Ms. Marzollo is the author of the popular I Spy series in addition to many other works for children.
