Scope and Content Note

The Maurice Sendak Collection of James Marshall contains books, drawings, paintings, and dummies created by James Marshall between 1979 and 1988 which were given to Maurice Sendak. The collection contains a small wooden box that contains Marshall's watercolor brushes, eyeglasses, a pen, and a note in Sendak's hand describing the last time Sendak saw his friend James before Marshall's death in October of 1992. The collection also contains an original "Happy Birthday Maurice" book by Marshall, and several books published between 1988 and 1997.

Custodial History

The Maurice Sendak Collection of James Marshall consists of items created or owned by James Marshall during his lifetime and given to Sendak. The Collection was bequeathed to the Northeast Children's Literature Collection in 2012 following Sendak's death on May 8, 2012.
