Scope and Content Note

The Papers consist of photographic slides of images taken by David A. Poirier in the years he served as Staff Archaeologist for the Connecticut State Historic Preservation Office, including images of the Prudence Crandall House in Canterbury, Newgate Prison in East Granby, Gungywamp Site in Groton, and of many of the the state's prehistoric, historic and industrial sites, highway and railroad bridges, and lighthouses.

The writings consists of books and other publications that are of or include writings for which Mr. Poirier is author, co-author or editor.

Biography/History

David A. Poirier received his undergraduate (1972), masters (1975) and Ph.D. (1984, Department of Anthropology) from the University of Connecticut and served as Staff Archaeologist for the Connecticut State Historic Preservation Office between 1976 and 2009. He is the author or co-author of several books about archaeology, including Connecticut Archaeology: Past, Present and Future ([Storrs]: Dept. of Anthropology, University of Connecticut, 1983), Waves on the Industrial Shore: Industrial Archaeology in Coastal Connecticut and Rhode Island (Hartford: Connecticut Historical Commission, 1986), Environmental Review Primer for Connecticut's Archaeological Resources (Hartford: Connecticut Historical Commission, 1987), In Remembrance: Archaeology and Death (Westport, Conn.: Bergin & Garvey, 1997), Dangerous Places: Health, Safety and Archaeology (Westport, Conn. : Bergin & Garvey, 2001), and Pathways to the Past: Transportation, Heritage and the 21st Century ([Newington, Connecticut] : Connecticut Department of Transportation : Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism, 2010). Mr. Poirier also served as guest editor for Cultural Resource Management (National Park Service) thematic issues (1995-2001): Archeology and the Public, Forensic Archeology, America’s Mining Heritage, What’s for Lunch, and Play Ball – Sports in American Life.

Provenance and Acquisition

The photographic slides were donated by David A. Poirier in November 2014. The writings were donated by Mr. Poirier in May 2015.
