Connecticut WPA Federal Writers Project Records

Abstract

The collection contains reports, studies, interviews and other records produced as part of the federal Works Progess Administration (renamed in 1939 as the Works Project Administration) project to document ethnic groups and communities living in Connecticut between 1929 and 1935. The collection contains materials both unique from and duplicated in the WPA collections of the Library of Congress and the Connecticut State Library.

Abstract

The collection consists of one manuscript, a Junior honors project, completed by Ms. Fallows for the Sociology/Anthropolgy Department at Wellesley College in 1947. The manuscript documents the early ethnic history of Granby, Connecticut and the reactions of the long-time residents to the arrival and assimilation of several ethnic groups.

Francis T. Maloney Papers

Francis T. Maloney was a United States Senator from 1934 until his death in 1945. Previous to that, he was a Congressman and, before that, Mayor of his hometown, Meriden, Connecticut. During World War I he was a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve Force.

Abstract Ralph Pancallo was a long-standing member of the International Typographical Union (now the Communications Workers of America). He joined ITU in 1935 when he started working as an Apprentice Printer for the Meridian Morning Record. In 1940, he started work with the New Britain Herald as a Composite Printer. Abstract

The "Peoples of Connecticut" Project was begun in 1974 under a grant from the Ethnic Heritage program, Office of Education, Department of Health, Education and Welfare. The goal of this program was to increase awareness, within Connecticut secondary schools, of different ethnic groups. Using curriculum guides and other instructional materials, the project endeavored to provide teaching and learning tools for discovering the cultural diversity of Connecticut's residents.
